Entry requirements for both degrees typically include a Master's qualification, but the DBA often places greater emphasis on industry experience, sometimes requiring a minimum of five to ten years in a managerial or leadership role. Structurally, a PhD is almost entirely research-driven with minimal coursework, while a DBA begins with structured modules before transitioning into an applied research project. This makes the DBA a more guided experience that many working professionals find easier to manage alongside a demanding career.
Choosing between the two comes down to your goal. If you want to contribute to academic knowledge or teach at university level, the PhD is the right path. If you want to tackle real organisational problems with scholarly rigour while remaining rooted in industry, the DBA is the more practical choice. Both carry equal doctoral standing, and neither is considered superior in terms of qualification level. The right doctoral degree is not the most prestigious one.
