Biography
Prof Dr. Mohamad Hanapi Mohamad is a seasoned academic, administrator, and consultant with over four decades of professional experience spanning higher education, international business, and public service. Born in Kota Bharu, Kelantan in 1955, he holds a PhD in International Business from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, an MBA in Industries of Developing Countries from the University of Stirling, a BBA in Finance from Idaho State University, and a Diploma in Public Administration from Institut Teknologi MARA.
His career began at FELDA in 1974, where he rose from clerical to executive officer, before transitioning to academia at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in 1985. Over more than two decades at UUM, he served as Lecturer, Associate Professor, Dean of the School of Management, Director of Corporate Planning, Advisor for International Business, and eventually Professor of International Business. He also contributed to UUM’s corporate arm, Uniutama Management Holdings, as Executive Director. His academic leadership extended to serving on the Senate and the Council of Professors.
Beyond UUM, Prof Dr. Hanapi has held prominent roles in Malaysian higher education, including Professor and Board Member at PICOMS University College, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Academic Advisor at University College Bestari, and Adjunct Professor at Asia e University. Internationally, he has been Visiting Professor in Indonesia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Thailand, and has delivered keynote lectures in Europe and Asia. He also serves on international academic councils, editorial boards, and as an external assessor for universities in Pakistan, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
His teaching expertise spans International Business, Industrial Marketing, Strategic and Corporate Management, Organizational Behaviour, Finance, and Research Methodology. His research interests include leadership, organizational performance, market structure, capital models, and multinational corporations. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications, with works appearing in international journals and conference proceedings from the late 1980s to 2019. Notable themes include globalization of firms, sustainable procurement, CSR, Islamic perspectives in business, and Malaysian economic models.
Prof Dr. Hanapi has also been deeply engaged in consultancy and training, advising government agencies and state corporations on corporate restructuring, strategic planning, and economic development. His clients include FELDA, KESEDAR, PKINK, DBKL, and various ministries. He has delivered workshops on finance, strategic management, and corporate governance for public administrators and executives in Malaysia and abroad.
In academic supervision, he has examined and supervised numerous PhD and DBA candidates across Malaysia, Australia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Indonesia, covering topics from leadership and entrepreneurship to international business strategies. His professional service includes roles with MQA panels, YADIM, Yayasan Islam Negeri Kedah, Kelantan Economic Advisory Council, and editorial boards of key journals.
Respected as both scholar and practitioner, Prof Dr. Hanapi has contributed significantly to international business scholarship, higher education governance, and socio-economic development in Malaysia and beyond.
